What is IV Anesthesia?
IV anesthesia is a type of sedative that can help to relax you during more complicated procedures. After placing an IV into a vein in your arm, we administer a low dose of sedative that can put you into a sleep-like state. Most patients won’t be able to recollect what happened during the procedure, so it’s ideal for those who have anxiety or who suffer panic attacks. IV anesthesia is safe, effective and can be utilized for both adult and pediatric patients.
Why would IV Anesthesia be needed?
The most common reason for needing IV anesthesia is because you’re undergoing a complex surgery or procedure. Patients who are having multiple extractions done or are having implants placed can benefit from IV anesthesia. The reason it is often needed is because it not only helps our patients to relax, but it allows us to do our very best work while you’re in the office. For patients who have severe anxiety or have trouble sitting still for dental treatment, IV anesthesia is an absolute must.
Who is a candidate for IV Anesthesia?
We use a minimal amount of sedative to achieve the desired result. We carefully administer and monitor sedation while you’re in our office. We will review all health and medical history prior to suggesting IV anesthesia. This sedative option is great for both adults and children coming into our office for care.
What happens during IV Anesthesia?
During IV anesthesia, we will place a small needle into a vein in your arm. We then carefully administer sedation to help relax you and put you into a sleep-like state during your appointment. Once you’re fully sedated, which can take about 15 minutes, we will perform the procedure as usual. We then remove the IV from your arm and bring you to a recovery room. You will need to have someone to bring you home from the office, since you won’t be awake or alert enough to drive yourself. IV anesthesia is safe for patients of all ages and carefully monitored in our office.
